After recently wrecking my 1995 firebird trans am and I decided to purchase a “new” car with the intent to build an amazing hot rod. I’ll be able to reuse a lot of the suspension parts, engine parts and interior seeing as how the body took the majority of the impact. I’ve always had the saying that if something breaks, it’s not always a bad thing. It’s simply and opportunity to build something better. Make sure you have good car insurance. I started by searching craigslist for several weeks looking for a...
I spent several hours today stripping the interior of the car. It was pretty nasty as I expected especially underneath the center console and generally everywhere on the carpet. I don’t have the ignition key or door keys, so I’ll be swapping my old steering column which is in much better shape. I’m also swapping the speedometer and radio. The factory speakers will also see an upgrade while staying in a budget. The carpet will receive a good cleaning tomorrow. I thought about replacing it but aftermarket carpet never fits...
If you plan on removing the engine with the k-member your going to need to do more work than what’s listed here. Things like disconnecting the fuel lines, electrical wiring and exhaust. I removed the lt1 firebird k-member and here was my procedure. If your leaving the engine in and swapping to a tubular k-member start by supporting the engine and unbolt the motor mounts. Then disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack and pinion. Disconnect the 2 front brake lines from the abs block. Disconnect the sway bar from the body on...
I finished removing the LT1 k-member today. I have the engine hoist hooked up to 2 straps and a backup chain was added just in case. Jacking the car up as the kmember stays in place and slides out. The front strut slides down the inner fender. I’ll touch this area up later with some under body rubberized coating. The kmember is out. I supported the kmember on a rolling dolly so i could easily roll it out from under the car. Looks like I have some parts for sale. Everything is suprisingly in great shape for it’s age. It has very...
I started by spraying down the engine bay with brake parts cleaner to remove any oil or grease. Then I wet sanded the engine bay metal with 400 grit sand paper with a mixture of water and dish washing soap. This mixture extends the sand paper life because it doesn’t clog the paper as fast. Here is that side again after removing the oil and grease. And the other side.. I pop riveted some hose clamps to the passenger side which will help me run the engine bay wiring later to get it out of sight. Also known as the engine bay wiring delete...
The rear end I’m going with has a 3.42 gear inside. I’ve never seen a used 10 bolt rear end that wasn’t covered in gunk and I had my hand full cleaning this one. After about 2 hours of cleaning. Painted the rear end with a outdoor coating that stuck really well. I shouldn’t have any issues with this coming...
